The Academy International School has been providing high quality education for thirty-five years. Situated in the countryside, just 15 minutes from Palma. The early years and primary school building was a Mallorcan country estate home which has evolved to have the main school buildings, tennis court, swimming pool, paddock for the horses, a purpose-built area for younger students, an indoor gym, playgrounds, outdoor Astroturf and multisport playing fields and a large school garden. The secondary school building located close by, has been purpose built to provide an exceptional learning environment for students and staff, creating spaces that drive academic excellence and enrichment activities both in and outside the classroom. With excellent facilities and resources, the school is designed to meet the needs to deliver an outstanding level of education.
Our Early Years Foundation Stage has children from aged two to five. In this stage of their education the children work towards the Early Learning Goals across seven areas of learning. The teachers are at the cutting edge of early childhood pedagogy with regular professional development both in Spain and from the UK. The team use the most up to date practices to provide a stimulating environment, plenty of indoor and outdoor space for child-initiated learning, varied resources to motivate different types of learners. The hands-on approach to learning is very evident in the school garden, the outdoor learning areas and the creative methods the teachers use to make sure the children are happy and enjoying the start of their learning journey.
Throughout primary the children follow the English curriculum studying the same topics as children in the UK. For example, in history they learn about the Victorians, the Tudors, the Egyptians and the Romans. As The Academy is recognised by the Spanish Department of Education the children also have lessons in Spanish, Catalan and social sciences from the Spanish curriculum. At The Academy there is an extensive library and children are encouraged to read for pleasure using the book borrowing system to access books by their favourite authors. Children follow reading schemes the same as in the UK and they also have access to an online reading scheme. The ‘Reading Buddy’ system creates a very positive relationship between our young and older readers. The primary teaching team are dedicated and passionate about education. They help the children to reach their full potential and encourage the children to be curious, empathic and kind. During their primary education all the children learn how to play the piano, they choose either French or German, and they enjoy the clubs at lunchtime for sports, ballet, chess and gardening.
Secondary at The Academy provides a wide range of subjects with specialist teachers and facilities. The students follow the English curriculum with subjects in the areas of the arts, humanities, sciences, maths, languages, design and technology. They have dynamic lessons, use project-based learning and a range of teaching and learning tools to provide the best education for the students. The students grow to be critical thinking decision makers. The students are prepared to take the Cambridge IGCSE exams at the age of 16. The exams are equivalent to the GCSE exams in the UK. The sixth form students complete the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. This programme is recognised as an excellent preparation for further study and success in the workplace. The creativity, activity and service elements of the programme provide opportunities for the students to think about local and global issues and make positive changes within themselves and in the wider world.
