The British College of Benalmádena is an independent, co-educational, British school situated in Torremuelle, next to the sea, in Benalmádena Costa, one of the most beautiful areas of the Costa del Sol.
Officially recognised by the Spanish Ministry of Education and as an accredited British school, The British College offers British education in all three of its sections: Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), Primary and Secondary School, following the full British National Curriculum along with the main areas of knowledge from the Spanish Curriculum.
The British College is also recognised by Cambridge University as a Cambridge International School. The school prepares and enters its students to sit IGCSE and GCE-A Level examinations, entitling them to obtain, together with the British Qualifications, the Cambridge International Certificate of Education. British qualifications obtained at The British College are accredited to the equivalent studies in the Spanish curriculum, meaning that, apart from the British qualifications and the International Certificate of Education, the students obtain the Spanish Certificate of “Educación Secundaria Obligatoria” and the “Título de Bachillerato”. This means that all the students can opt to go to a university in Britain, Spain or in any other part of the world. If Spain is their option, then the students of the British College have direct access to the Spanish Universities without having to sit any university entrance examinations. Their IGCSEs and A Level results will allow them direct access.
The pupils of the British College, as well as following the official Physical Education National Curriculum, take part in interschool sports competitions and several school teams are officially registered.
The teaching staff consists of fully qualified British teachers who deliver all the English National Curriculum subjects and Spanish teachers who deliver “Lengua”, “Ciencias Sociales” and Spanish. French is also taught from Year 5 onwards.
The school also has a Psychology department run by two psychologists and a Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo) and it is headed by a clinical psychologist, who is an expert in infantile-juvenile clinical psychology and cognitive-behavioural therapy.
Our curriculum is inclusive, and we aim to provide all our students with the best possible opportunities for higher education irrespective of their ability. Consequently, in Key Stages 4 and 5 we offer a wide range of subjects aiming to meet the needs of all learners. We encourage our students to pursue their individual interests and therefore our sixth formers are able to opt for any combination of four AS/A Level option choices. Consequently, students in Years 12 and 13 each have their own individual timetable.
Personal, social and health education (PSHE) forms an integral part of our curriculum at all levels. Throughout the school, all possible opportunities are taken to help and enable students to develop the personal qualities which will allow them to lead happy lives, enjoying their rights, while at the same time exercising their responsibilities. Through the PSHE programme, pupils are encouraged to be responsible, to help others, and to be respectful and supportive of each other. Within the PSHE programme, career guidance is covered, beginning in Year 9 with general information about occupations and the personal qualities and qualifications required for these. This is built upon in subsequent years leading to subject choices at GCSE and A Level. Students in Years 12 and 13 have specific sessions for UCAS applications included in their individual timetables. We have a Sixth Form careers adviser team with three very experienced members of staff who provide full assistance with university applications – including individual help with the writing of personal statements, and guidance to prepare and take part in mock interviews – in the UK through UCAS and in Spain through the UNED.
