The British School of Lanzarote is a private co-educational school founded in 1985. The school is situated 3 km north from Arrecife in a pleasant setting in Tahiche. Students of different nationalities come to the school from all over the island.
The British School of Lanzarote is fully recognised by both the UK and Spanish authorities and admits students from 3 to 18 years of age. It offers a predominantly British style of education which is aligned to the National Curriculum with appropriate adaptations for its status as an international school serving students from a range of different nationalities. In addition to the UK curriculum offered, it additionally provides the obligatory subjects of Spanish language and culture. The first language of the school is English.
BSL facilities include bright classrooms, a science laboratory, library, ICT room, recreation areas and a kitchen and dining room. In addition to these facilities the school has regular access to Sports facilities on the island to enhance physical education provision taught in school.
Staff at the school are dedicated, experienced and qualified. They come from the UK, Spain and beyond. The class sizes are small and students benefit from a high level of academic and personal attention to their individual needs. As a result, children generally settle quickly, make new friends and enjoy school life. They usually make good progress in their educational studies and learn effectively. Extra-curricular activities are also available during the year.
All students at the school participate in standardised test and assessments based on the UK curriculum. At the end of Years 2, 6 and 9 pupils take end of Key Stage tests to measure their individual progress. Students take internationally recognised Cambridge IGCSE examinations at the end of Year 11, IGCSEs serve as a solid platform from which to begin their further education studies. Students can choose to stay at BSL for this, in Year 12 and 13, as the school now offers International A Levels in our new Sixth Form department.
The school has been successful in its pass rates in these examinations and many have gone on to distinguish themselves at university level. The school is also a centre for Open University Examinations.
