The Lady Elizabeth School was founded on 14 September, 1987 with an initial roll of 14 pupils in two adjacent villas at Parque Espendido, Javea. Through the years the school has expanded rapidly. Indeed, the original site proved too small for LES and eventually the Primary and Secondary schools were moved to separate sites and only in September, 2018 did they reunite to their present location on the Cumbre del Sol in Benitachell, with a current roll of 1330 pupils, ages 24 months through 18 years supported by over 180 faculty and support staff. Approximately 27% of the student body claims Spain as their home country, 19% British and the remainder from over 55 nationalities. Our largest group by demographic is, in fact, ‘other’.
The school offers a British curriculum foundation with older students sitting examinations at GCSE and A-Level in a wide variety of disciplines. Pupils are also afforded the opportunity to complete the Spanish Graduado and Bachillerato, allowing LES graduates to matriculate in tertiary institutions both here in Spain and globally. LES pupils have gone on to study in several different countries and the school is promoting strong connections with the growing list of alumni. In Primary students follow the Early Years Foundation Framework (EYFS) and International Primary Curriculum (IPC) programme as an effective preparation for the transition to Secondary.
LES is a Member of the National Association of British Schools in Spain (NABSS), and is a certified examination centre for Cambridge, EDEXCEL, AQA, ABRSM and LAMDA Examinations.
The school promotes a balanced whole-child education, with strong sports and arts programs as well as service-learning opportunities for LES pupils. Some examples are the Lady Elizabeth Benitachell club in sports where our pupils engage with other local school pupils, our Model United Nations events, our International Learning Opportunities for Students (ILOS) programs, a variety of charitable actions led by the House system, school productions, beach clean ups and a host of other Student Life activities. LES offers over 50 Plus Clubs (After School Activities) under the 4 domains of sport, the arts, service learning and academic clubs.
Students are supported in addition to their core subject teachers by Student Support services including a school nurse, EAL faculty, Learning Support and Pastoral Care faculty. We have a counsellor in Primary and also in Secondary who support students and families. We use Jigsaw PSHE throughout the school and have a specialist offering Relationships and Sexual Education (RSE) programming school-wide. The LES faculty hail predominantly from the United Kingdom, and also represent nations such as Spain, Canada, Portugal, France, Holland and Sweden to name but a few.
LES parents are welcome at the school at any time and the school is committed to parent education with a host of activities on offer, from book clubs to aerobics, lane swims to language lessons. LES Amigos is a parent group specifically focused on contributing to the community by hosting events designed to increase family’s participation in the school’s social and academic events. LES offers a Parents as Learners (PALs) program of workshops to help parents better support their children.
