Presentation
- The Queen congratulated the school in 2016 for its outstanding success
- In 2015, five students of the school obtained the highest GCSE results in the world and some of our students represented Great Britain and Germany in sporting events.
- The school has no entrance examination and youngsters of all abilities are accepted.
- To maintain quality of education we limit our maximum class size to 16 students.
- There are fifteen acres of grounds with many different sports facilities that include the only eight-lane 400 metre athletics track on Lanzarote. Most students choose a higher education in the sciences and there are four well equipped science laboratories, two computer science laboratories, two extensive libraries and a fully equipped music room.
- This is very different school, where we develop each student as an individual and make the most of their character traits. At Advanced Level, rarely do two students have the same timetable and a incredibly complex study programme allows students to choose any selection of our A Level subjects.
- More than forty years ago, the “Hispano Británico” system of education was first invented for this school. This system is now used throughout most British schools in Spain. It teaches an extended British curriculum, that includes Spanish language and the geography and history of Spain. Students in this school are able to read in two languages at the age of five, taught to touch type at the age of eight and then begin an extensive foundation in both computer studies and sciences.
- At twelve, their hours of tuition are extended to allow a minimum of fourteen IGCSE subjects to be taught (all the sciences, four languages (with German and Chinese), plus an extended computer course). Examinations in all these subjects are obligatory and the Hispano Británico is probably the only school in the world where all Year 11 students will obtain results in fourteen subjects. The more able students may obtain seventeen different subject results.
- All this is achieved in a relaxed atmosphere of healthy and continuous academic competition, but where sports and extra-curricular activities in Lanzarote’s fine climate can sometimes take as much priority as formal studies. A good example of this is our excellent theatre production, where every year all of the students up to Year 6 participate in our hugely successful christmas play.
- The Advanced Level examinations are linear rather than modular and mostly with Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) which we regard as being the most exacting of examination Boards. With this truly different and successful system of education, the Hispano Británico has been placing students in top universities on a regular basis since 1986. Both the youngest person ever to graduate as a Doctor of Veterinary Sciences in Great Britain and the youngest person ever to graduate as a Doctor of Medicine studied in this school.
- Whilst promotion of students does not usually happen in Britain and rarely happens in Spain, in this school, forty one children have been advanced one year in their studies and two students are two years advanced. That is 17% of our school population
- It was nine years ago that CIE began to present awards to the best student in any subject in a particular country, or the best student in the world. During these years and discounting results at IGCSE or in Spanish, thirty four different students have received a total of thirty four national awards together with nine world awards in education.
- This school has shown special ability at empowering young ladies in sciences. Of the three students in Spain who obtained the highest possible university entrance requirements (the nota 10) in 2017, two of them were from this school. In both 2016 and 2017, our students obtained the highest mark of all the thousands of students in Spain in the Cambridge Advanced Level Examination in both Chemistry and Biology. This year a student also obtained the highest mark in Environmental Science. These last awards have all been achieved by girls.
- The Hispano Británico is the only accredited British curriculum school (BSO) on Lanzarote. It is a recognised Centre for the University of Cambridge (CIE), London Edexcel (Pearson) examinations, and Trinity examinations. It is a UCAS Centre for university entrance, and examination Centre for the Open University and the Goethe Institute. In 2014 the school was authorised by the British Government as a Centre for the instruction of teachers in their postgraduate year. It is quality assured by Ofsted (British DfE number: 141421)
- This school provides children with immensely rich experiences of life, endowing them with a worldliness far beyond that of the usual young learner. They acquire a delightful manner, an enquiring mind, an exquisite articulation of the English language and an immense hard work ethic.
- Parents who choose this exceptional education for their children, will be richly rewarded.
