• “The new Gifted and Talented paradigm – How can we provide for highly able learners?” Teachmeet session. Leader David Fletcher.

  • A Teachmeet consists of fast-moving presentations, of either 2 minutes (Nano) or 7 minutes (Micro), in which classroom teachers volunteer to present to an audience their experience of successful teaching strategies that have made a positive difference to student learning. Put simply – teacher training, organised by teachers, for teachers.
• “Mastery of Mathematics using manipulatives” Presenter Lisa Lalor.
  • (Salón Meliá Meeting 1).
  • This workshop will showcase the use of manipulatives for embedding mastery and is primarily geared towards teachers and leaders involved in Mathematics teaching at Early Years and Primary. Participants will have the chance to explore different manipulatives as learners and consider how these will impact on their teaching.
• “Showcasing best practice in the teaching of Phonics and Early Reading” Presenter Lynn Fox.
  • (Salón Meliá Meeting 2).
  • Ruth Miskin Training (RMT) was chosen to design and deliver, with the Department of Education, a series of Phonics Roadshow events around the UK. RMT is delighted to repeat this session for NABSS. Participants will explore the principles and practices behind the teaching of systematic synthetic phonics as the primary approach to early reading, using video footage from UK schools.
• “Striving for Early Years Best Practice” Presenter Eva Cartwright.
  • (Salón Meliá Meeting 3).
  • An opportunity to consider what best practice in the early years may look like, achieving best possible outcomes and maximising observation opportunities to plan next steps. This workshop will enable practitioners to discuss, share ideas and reflect, leaving with ideas to implement in their setting.
• “An international teaching toolkit: preparation for International GCSE (and beyond)” Presenter Kevin Hiatt.
  • (Salón Meliá Meeting 4).
  • This session will look at the importance of Key Stages 1-3 in preparation for further learning, and how a combination of curriculum design, resources, assessment, and teacher professional development is the best way to support progression from the ages of 5 to 14.
    Additionally, it will illustrate why Computing should be considered as the fourth core subject (alongside English, Maths and Science) at the primary and lower secondary levels, and how we set about building a curriculum to support the needs of the next generation of workers in a digital world.
• “Raising achievement across all abilities through the explicit teaching of academic vocabulary” Presenter Lisa Parkinson.
  • (Salón Meliá Meeting 5).
  • This session will provide an overview of proven teaching methods that support students’ vocabulary development and participants will leave with practical approaches that can be used instantly in the classroom across all curriculum areas. This session is aimed at those working with students from primary to sixth form.
